RESCUING OF ANIMALS IN DISTRESS

Despite the fact that PAWS rescued and treated more than 30,000 animals since 2000 we know there is still so much more to do.

We need the help of volunteers to rescue animals in distress as if PAWS spent its time trying to find stray puppies, there would be no time left for the staff & vets to sterilise  animals and prevent the birth of unwanted litters of puppies and kittens, most of which would end up becoming strays.

Which animal in distress can PAWS attend to?

  • An abandoned puppy or kitten that is too young to fend for himself
  • An injured or sick animal that cannot run away when PAWS driver approaches him
  • Any stray dog or cat that has already been caught by a volunteer

If an abandoned puppy or kitten which is found by a volunteer is not injured, we usually ask the person to keep the animal at his place for 1 or 2 days, until a PAWS vehicle is free to go and fetch it. PAWS do not take in strays but only animals in distress.

STERILISATION OF DOGS AND CATS

Call PAWS on 6312304 – 7275364 or 7275365 to book an appointment!
You may either take your pet to Floréal, Beau Vallon or PAWS Mobile Clinics. If you don’t have a vehicle, PAWS will fetch you and your animal, and will bring you back home.
PAWS Sterilisation Campaign is partly sponsored by the Ministry of Tourism and is offered free of charge to those who cannot afford to pay for their animal; however, any donation is always most welcomed to support PAWS.

EDUCATION OF THE POPULATION

PAWS is often invited to school and Social Centres for talks to sensitise the population on improving animal welfare in Mauritius. PAWS main topics are:

  • Dogs and cats’ needs
  • Importance of sterilisation
  • Dogs’ body language to prevent dog bites

If you would like PAWS to visit your school or region or you can help with contacts, please call Ornella Chellen (PAWS Education Coordinator)

ANTI-ECTOPARASITES CAMPAIGN

Each dog taken to PAWS for sterilisation is automatically treated for mange, ticks and fleas.
PAWS now also offers a paid home service to treat the animals and their environment for ticks and fleas. Please call PAWS for more details and a quote.

ADOPTION OF DOGS AND CATS

Come and choose a dog or a cat at PAWS in Beau Vallon on:

  • Monday from 12h00 to 4pm
  • Tuesday to Friday from 8h30 a.m to 4p.m
  • Saturday from 8h30 to 11h30

PAWS request to those who adopt a dog:

  • Your yard must be fenced
  • You must afford a minimum budget of Rs500 per month to feed your dog
  • You must have a budget to treat your animal when sick
  • You must have enough time to spend with your pet

Adoption Fees:
Rs600 is claimed for a dog to partly cover the costs of vaccines, treatments, leash and collar
Rs400 is claimed for a cat to partly cover the costs of vaccine and treatments.
This symbolic measure is not only to contribute to the PAWS expenses, but also to make sure that the person coming to adopt an animal can afford to feed and care for his pet.
