Field Work - The Real Story

Field Work is very rewarding because we make an impact and a real difference to the lives of the animals we treat. PAWS volunteers are in the field every day washing and dipping animals for mange, ticks and fleas. When we come across dogs that are tied up on short chains we encourage the owners to let the dogs run free if the yard is enclosed, and if not we make running chains. We make shelters for dogs that need it, and we make sure they have adequate food and water.

Rescued dog at Pont Naturel - L'Escalier Wednesday 6th February 2008

"We received a call from Radio Plus saying that someone had called about a dog that had fallen 10 metres from a cliff onto the rocks below at ‘Pont Naturel’, in L’Escalier.

I went there with a Policeman, and we saw that the dog's chain had got stuck between two rocks. The waves were so huge that at times, the dog was completely covered by the sea.

We called the Fire Brigade to ask for help, but they said it was too dangerous for them to get down the reef.

We called the SMF (Special Mobile Force), but they also said they were not equipped for this kind of operation.

We watched this poor dog for three hours. He was petrified, but resigned to his fate. He didn't even bark. He just seemed to be used to suffering.

At last, the GIPM (Group Intervention Police Mauricienne) came to help and it only took them 30 minutes to rescue the dog! They were so professional with all their equipment, and so well trained!!

We took the dog to PAWS. He was covered in ticks, and his leg was slightly injured.

Stephanie, Dany & Annabelle took care of him and treated his wounds. The poor dog was starving and dehydrated!

We then left him in a quiet room to eat, drink, sleep and recover from this traumatic experience.

Pont Naturel is at least 5 Km from the nearest village, and I don’t think this dog went there for a swim, by choice!

I think his owner threw him in the sea to get rid of him because he was infested with ticks.

If we cannot find this dog a 5-star home, he will stay at PAWS as one of our pets!"

Comments from visitors:

"This story brought me to tears! Thank you to PAWS and all the other people involved in this rescue. It distressed me so much to think that someone could possibly have thrown that dog into the sea. How horrific! " KB

"Thanks to Roxane and everyone who assisted in saving this dog - you are truly special" JB
