PAWS policy statement on Euthanasia

Although it can never be said that PAWS is "for" euthanasia, we recognize the unfortunate and inevitable necessity for it in certain circumstances.

In Mauritius there are more dogs and cats than there are appropriate homes. This is a tragic global issue that animal welfare shelters all over the world like PAWS struggle with day by day.

As long as people aren't spaying and neutering their companion animals, open-admission animal shelters and organizations like PAWS must do society's "dirty work."

PAWS view is that these unwanted animals as a last alternative, deserve a dignified, painless death rather than suffer from such cruelties as starvation, untreated/terminal disease and trauma stemming from physical abuse; outcomes commonly associated with an unwanted and uncared for existence. Similarly, long-term housing of individual dogs and cats in animal refuge kennels is not a viable option; neither for the animals "quality of life" nor PAWS; if we are to continue to regularly take in animals in distress.

Humane Euthanasia, which is PAWS practice when necessary, must be understood for what it is: A last-step, end-of-the-road option to spare an animal further hardship and suffering.

Please, if you care about animals, help prevent more of them from being born only to end up chained and left to waste away in people's back yards, suffering on the streets where people kick at them or shoo them away like garbage or alas, euthanized in animal shelters for lack of a good home. If you want to save lives, always have your animals spayed or neutered.

PAWS offers many opportunities for concerned animal lovers to help us in our mission.
